'Good' NW5 school must challenge pupils more, say Ofsted

A Kentish Town primary school has been classed as a ‘good school with the capacity for continued improvement’, though criticised for not challenging more able pupils, according to a recent Ofsted inspection.

Carlton Primary, which is larger than average and has a large majority of pupils from a wide range of ethnic groups, promotes social cohesion in an outstanding way, the report continued.

Parents surveyed as part of the Ofsted inspection process were identified as being ‘very happy’ with the school.

Throughout the school the overall quality of teaching and learning was found to be good although inspectors did comment that in some lessons there could be more challenge for the most able pupils.

Another positive for the school was that Ofsted found the staff motivated and working within a ‘team’ environment.

Councillor Andrew Mennear, executive member for schools at Camden Council, said: “Everyone at Carlton has worked extremely hard since the last inspection to make significant improvements and that hard work is paying off. The atmosphere at the school is a happy one and I would like to congratulate both staff and governors for everything they have done.”
